Top Chinese lawyers visit the Netherlands

A delegation of eight top Chinese lawyers visited the Netherlands. Their aim with this visit was to get to know the Dutch and European legal systems better, with a special emphasis on the way in which Intellectual Property law is regulated in the Netherlands and Europe.

Among the members of the group are four judges of the Higher Court in Beijing. The other delegates are senior officials from the agricultural and horticultural sectors, who will mainly concentrate on studying Dutch Plantbreeders' rights.

The Chinese visitors' arrival appears to mark a breakthrough in the deadlock that has existed for years between Chinese and Dutch lawyers where exchanges of legal information between the two countries are concerned.

The delegation began its visit on a Friday morning on the Herengracht in Amsterdam, where it visited the renowned and internationally esteemed trademark agency, De Merkplaats. Managing director Mr. Alphons Geerlings gave the Chinese their first glimpse behind the scenes of Dutch Intellectual Property law. A visit to the International Hortifair at Amsterdam's RAI exhibition center is also on the program. With more than 900 participants, this is one of the world's leading horticultural fairs.
