.EU DOMAIN NAMES
Trademarking can give you a head start in the race for the .eu domain names.
The .eu domain names - what, where, who, when and how?
What is .eu? A new extension for domain names, just like .nl or .com or .biz.
Where does .eu come from? The extension .eu refers to internet addresses from countries within the European Community.

Who can register a .eu domain name?
- Companies with registered offices, central administration or main offices in the European Union;
- Individuals whose official place of residence is in the European Union.
When?
Fase 1: 7 december 2005 to 6 february 2006
Registration is open for trademark holder and governmental organizations.
Fase 2: 7 february to 6 april 2006
Registration is open for tradenames, registered at the Chambers of Commerce.
Fase 3: from 7 april 2006
Registration is open for everybody.
How? Applications are made through a recognised intermediary known as a “registrar”. Note: the registrar has to be officially recognised by Eurid, for example Domeinbalie.nl.
If you use an intermediary who is not officially registered, then your application will not go through and it is highly likely that you will lose your opportunity to get priority.
Getting a .eu extension
When the .eu domain names are launched, the only names that it will be possible to register for the first two months are those registered as trademarks and the names of governmental bodies and their acronyms, plus the geographical regions covered or governed.
Where there are duplicate names or trademarks, the rule is once again ‘first come, first served’.
Take the case of Ajax, for example. Here you have not only the Dutch football club, but also cleaning products and fire extinguishers. They are all branded as ‘Ajax’. Which of them will be first in line for www.ajax.eu?
During the subsequent two months, the predefined priority cases will have to compete with other rights granted under national legislation. These could be items such as company names and brands, copyright names and trade names. Naturally enough, the ‘first come, first served’ rule applies once again when names are duplicated.
Immediately after this period of four months, individuals can also register their names. Then it no longer matters whether your name is registered or used as a trading name or protected by copyright.
A fast way to obtain a valid registered trademark is what is known as a kort-geding-depot – a “summary registration order”. This is a fast-tracked trademark registration procedure. You can get registered within a week.
