Everyone is aware that these are trademarks. But did you know that logos like Nike's swoosh sign or the Mercedes star are also trademarks? And that trademarks cannot only be registered for products, but also for services - for example, the trademark Nationale Nederlanden for insurance services?

Slogans may also serve as a trademark; for example the famous Dutch slogan 'Foutje bedankt' was registered as early as 1993 by SNS REAAL.

The same applies to abbreviations or numbers, for example KPMG, IBM, 911 (Porsche), 501 (Levi's). Even colours can be registered as trademarks. For instance, the colour green is a good distinction for the goods and services of the Dutch postal service KPN. Shapes may also be protected as trademarks, and examples include the shape of certain Smiths crisps or the Grolsch flip-top bottle. These days you can even register sounds and smells as trademarks to a certain extent.

To cut a long story short - you can register much more as trademarks than you probably imagine.
